We women have to be careful when we congregate. Often, good-natured banter turns into chatting about others—both celebrities and real-life acquaintances. Unfortunately, it's a short distance from concern to gossip.
"What was she thinking, posting that picture on Facebook?" we ask, shaking our heads in dismay. Suddenly, we begin tearing another woman down. In 1 Timothy, the apostle Paul warns against hurtful habits. He urges Christians to exercise self-control, a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
After all, friendships are based on trust, and if our friends hear us speaking evil of someone else, they might wonder if we ever do the same to them.
What's a girl to do? First, remember to respect your fellow women. God created each person with dignity and He sees them through eyes of love. We should, too. Second, try to season your conversations with grace and wisdom. Instead of talking about the newest tabloid tidbit, ask your friend how's she coping with a life challenge—and let your companion know that you can be trusted to keep her answers confidential. Third, pray for your friends and your times together. Not only will these actions please God, but you'll have a better time—and less guilt.
LET'S PRAY:
Lord, thank You for the gift of friendship. Help me to speak only beautiful, uplifting words when my sisters and I spend time together. Remind me to not gossip, and forgive me when I succumb to that temptation.
