But the wealthy father’s Last Will and Testament is not without conditions. In order for the child to receive the inheritance, she has to take a scrub brush to her mess of a life. She must prove that she is worthy by knocking off a list of duties and learn a series of lessons that her father spelled out in the will.
As the drama unfolds, we the viewers wonder, Will the inheritor learn her life lessons and clean up her act? Or will she lose her inheritance because of her rotten behavior?
I’m so glad God didn’t do this to us. If I had to earn my inheritance from God by my goodness and self-righteousness, I would fail. The inheritance would be lost.
The good news is that, as believers in Jesus Christ and because of the Holy Spirit in us, we have an inheritance from the Father that is not based on our ability to behave. Our inheritance is not conditioned on whether or not we live up to the demands of righteousness. Because we can’t.
Instead, our inheritance is secured and protected by the blood of Jesus Christ. It is sealed by the Holy Spirit. Nothing we do can change what Jesus has already done. It’s His estate. If we’ve put our trust in Jesus Christ, the inheritance is ours.
Now that’s a plot line I’m happy to live out!
