“Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true.”
One trait of God I once found most challenging to grasp was that He does not and cannot lie. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to believe it; it was just that I had never known someone that could not or would not lie. In trying to understand God and all He is, we are limited in our human understanding. We base our views by what we have seen and experienced. Therefore, we have never encountered a person that cannot lie. We often see God as we see ourselves, as that’s the only comparison we can relate to. As many of us, I have been a casualty of lies and also the culprit. Research shows that Americans lie on average, eleven times a week. Lies destroy families, marriages, jobs, society and people. The most infamous liar now and in history is one many choose to ignore; in fact one of his many names is, “The father of lies” (John 8:44).
One of the biggest comforts on my walk with God and when facing doubt is that God cannot lie. That’s a game changer! Meditate on that for a while; let it soak in. He CANNOT lie. We can be open with God because He is trustworthy. He will not twist our words and use them against us.
- He’s not human.
“God is not like people. He tells no lies. He is not like humans. He doesn't change his mind. When he says something, he does it. When he makes a promise, he keeps it.” -Numbers 23:19
- He cannot sin. Humans at their very core are all sinners. We all fall short and miss the mark. God cannot sin.
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet he did not sin.”-Hebrews 4:15
- To show us He is faithful and above all else He can be trusted. If we could not trust God, would we follow Him? No.
- Lying is a character flaw, and by God lying it would go against His very nature. God is truth.
- God is pure, holy and perfect.
“To begin with, I recognize that it is impossible that God should ever deceive me. For in every case of trickery or deception some imperfection is to be found; and although the ability to deceive appears to be an indication of cleverness or power, the will to deceive is undoubtedly evidence of malice or weakness, and so cannot apply to God.” -René Descartes
- God is true and flawless.
How do we know He can’t lie?
It’s a fact. Nothing in God’s word ever turned out to be a lie; He did all He said He would do, every time.
It’s funny how we will throw around our trust to humans who are not trustworthy relatively easily, but we will question God and give Him the side eye when it comes to trusting Him. We must remember that God's track record verses humans is as pure as snow and without mistake. It’s been tested over and over again and the fact is, it’s true.
