Fasting is an intentional stripping away from the body and soul things that hold us down and tether us to earth’s perspective. When we fast, our loads are lightened, and our spirits are positioned to soar!
Outside of martyrdom, fasting is the ultimate example and expression of the flesh’s submission to God, and when we submit to God we are no longer running in terror; we run with purpose, while the enemy flees!
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee. (James 4:7)
When we humble ourselves and hide in the shadow of His wing, the enemy looks for us and sees only the form of the Most High. We are hidden within the shelter of His wing. In this place of safety and rest there is no lack of authority or power. As we stop feeding other areas of our lives, we hunger and thirst for more of Him. He transforms our appetites as we feed on His goodness and loving-kindness, which is so much better for us than earthly delights. (Even coffee and chocolate!)
Here are some suggestions for your fast:
- First, remember that this is not a time of denial for you, but for your flesh. Your spirit is willing; it is your flesh that’s uncomfortable. Therefore spiritually, this is a time of celebration, of feasting and joy. Remember while Esther fasted, she prepared a lavish banquet for her king. You are going to indulge the King, not your flesh. When you honor the King, He will honor you with His presence. Approach this as a privilege, not a punishment.
- Treat this like a life-and-death issue, because it is. You are putting bondage to death.
For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13)
Since something is going to have to die in the process, let it be the sinful nature and the misdeeds of the body. Again, like Esther, take it seriously.
- There is no sense in denying yourself food, entertainment or companionship if you don’t indulge yourself in God. Gather everything you need beforehand so you can rest during your fast. Turn off your phone, shut off your TV, close your laptop, disconnect from everything that distracts and detracts. Create an environment that fosters the presence of God. Be still or fill your house with praise and worship music. Get a journal and set your attention and affection on Him.
- A fast is more about strengthening your spirit than starving your flesh. Open up with your written prayer requests for this time. Make these petitions known. Pour out your heart like water before the Lord. Tell Him every fear and hope; be open and honest with Him. Record what He shows you through Scripture and prayer.
- Come boldly before Him. Like Esther, put on your royal robes (of righteousness in Christ) and stand in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king’s hall (Esther 5:1). Know that He will be pleased to see you, and He will extend His royal scepter of favor in your direction. When He asks what you want, tell Him you have come to invite Him to a banquet of worship and adoration, and when you have feasted together, make your petitions known.
- During this time, go through your house and rid it of everything unclean or displeasing to the Lord. The Holy Spirit will show you these items, so be sensitive and obedient to His leading. This may mean inappropriate movies, books, letters, music, or even pictures of old boyfriends. Anything that encourages impurity should definitely be suspect.
I dare you to offer up your sexuality as a fragrant offering before the Lord. Ask Him if there are any other areas of your life that He would desire to touch, heal, or adjust. Offer those before Him as well. Make this a time to love Him with your whole being and He will give you living water and nourishment you could not have imagined.
