One thing I made that I really like is human expression. It goes along with feelings and emotions, and sometimes I see facial expressions that crack Me up even though I made them all. Then there are things like gasps and oohs and ahhhs and exasperation sighs and sighs of contentment. All that just really makes Me smile—which is, of course, another great facial expression.
I watched some great expressions today. I watched as My Son started walking on water on a lake, in the middle of a storm. But I saw the best expressions when I looked at the boys in the boat. Their eyes got wide, and their jaws dropped, and their bodies got real tense.
I thought it was great that when they saw Him walking on waves the size of their boat, they forgot to be scared for a second… they were too amazed at something they had never seen.
(It’d do a lot of you some good during some of your more frightening times to get distracted by Me so you could stop being so afraid.)
Anyway, the faces were delightful—especially when Peter decided to jump in. I wish you could have seen the faces of the other eleven.
But Peter’s face—the determination when he actually made the choice to step out into… or onto… the water. His eyes went from intention… to elation… to fear… and then when he realized that he was doing something he shouldn’t be able to do, his mouth got wide and his eyebrows went up almost to his hairline.
The veins on the side of his head were just about to pop as he went down face first into the water. Then Jesus reached out and grabbed him, and his facial expression of total relief was sheepish and magnificent.
Jesus and I looked at each other and smiled. We loved watching them. Every time Jesus did something like that, He would always pause for a second and look around just to see their faces. They had that astonished look for a long time after He fed the thousands with just a lunchbox full of food. They laughed and clapped and punched each other when He healed the lepers. They fell on the ground in amazement and cried and laughed all at the same time when He brought Lazarus out of the tomb. It wasn’t laughing like “that was funny” laughing. It was uncontrollable, I-can’t-believe-that-He-is-truly-God-and-we-get-to-be-part-of-this-and-my-heart-is-so-full-I-feel-like-I-can’t-contain-it-all kind of laughing.
I watched Jesus’ face closely that day as well. He had just cried. Then He looked at His friends with such intense love that it showed all over His face. Then with His brow furrowed and His teeth clenched He called Lazarus out. His own heart was beating as fast as it ever had, and then all of a sudden His tension released, and He looked around and saw the same faces I was watching… and He looked up at Me and out of the same eyes that just gave up those tears came a wink and a smile….
And I felt that had anyone been able to see Me right then, they would have caught a glimpse of a brand-new expression… just created on the face of God.
