We have the promises of God! What a blessing God’s Word is! We need to see it as a blessing instead of seeing it as nothing but rules and regulations or an onerous duty.
God describes the Word as our spiritual weapon. A weapon is something that we use to gain an advantage; the Word gives us the advantage over our flesh. We can use the Word to inflict pain and injury on the enemy and see victory in our lives.
The Word is our weapon. The Word will get down to the core of the matter. As we take the Word of God in, it will do a spiritual work inside of us that we cannot do on own. The Word will penetrate—it will go deep inside of us, and it will change us from the inside out (Hebrews 4:12). The Word that we take in will eventually come back out of us in the form of actions, words, thoughts, and so on. If we are ever going to see victory over sin it is only going to be because we have an intimate, committed relationship with the Word of God.
We have the promises of God; therefore, we can cleanse ourselves from the sin that is so prevalent in this world. The Word divides soul and Spirit—the Word opens our eyes to what is of God and what is of man. The Word will keep us from indulging in our flesh. David understood this; he hid the Word in his heart to keep himself away from sin (Psalm 119:11); we can do the same.
The water of the Word will cleanse. Jesus told Peter that his feet needed to be washed, but Peter did not understand what Jesus was referring to. Jesus told him that his whole body was clean because he had already had a bath (John 13:6-10). We must understand that we are already clean because we accepted Christ’s sacrifice for us. We have been cleansed from all of our sin! None of our sin is lingering in God’s eyes, but sin does affect us. We need help with what sin produces in our daily lives.
The water of the Word washes away the effects of the flesh each day. We need to cleanse ourselves of all that our flesh and the world deposit in our lives. When we let the Word wash us, we are taking part in our spiritual nature or who we are in Christ. We are taking on our spiritual nature when we bathe in the Word; we are covering ourselves with Christ. Unless we are washed by Him, we have no part in Him—if we are not being cleansed by the Word we will not be able to produce spiritual fruit; we will not be able to participate in our spiritual nature.
The Word is referred to many times as water, but water is not only for cleansing. Water is essential to life. We cannot exist without water. Water satisfies so many needs—the need for refreshment, the need for nourishment, the need for growth, and more. The Word is our spiritual satisfaction. The ingestion of the Word will refresh us when we are in dry place. The Word will feed and cultivate us as we fill ourselves with it. The Word will promote spiritual growth in our lives as we continue in it. The Word is everything we need for life (2 Peter 1:3).
Life is demanding, and life can be arduous. Every day we will find ourselves falling into the flesh and drifting from the Word. Every day we must address this decadence. We must take the time to make the Word part of our everyday lives. As we take in the Word of God, it is like fresh water being poured over us and washing away the traces of the day. We should begin our day with the Word, we should fill our day with the Word, and we should end our day with the Word. The Word is our gift—let’s fill ourselves with it so that it is overflowing into every area of our lives!
