Light. It’s something I often take for granted during the sultry summer months.
Whenever we march toward winter and it begins getting dark earlier, I’m always surprised. Kind of silly – I know. It happens every year, but I’m never quite prepared to say goodbye to daylight by 6 or 7 o’clock in the evening.
Unable to see
Complete darkness has descended by the time I let our Golden retriever out before bedtime. I’ve made the mistake of forgetting to take a flashlight. I can’t see a thing in the inky blackness. With a dog that’s known to wander, I know I’m in trouble.
She takes advantage of my poor night vision to explore areas of the yard I’d rather she didn’t visit. Light makes all the difference. I can keep a close eye on her and guide her away from the ivy and the woods – places of potential danger.
Light for my path
God’s Word is a lot like my flashlight. It illuminates my steps and keeps me on the right path:
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
I can avoid lots of problems and heartache when I use this Light in my life. Instead of groping through the day blindly, the Bible outlines truths that will help me make good decisions.
A daily decision
Every day I’m faced with choices. It’s easy to get distracted and let things get out of balance. Whether I’m running late or feeling overwhelmed, sometimes I skip studying my Bible in order to take care of the urgent things.
The end of the day comes, and I realize I didn’t put God first. I allowed everything else to crowd Him out.
A quick trip to the light of God’s Word points me in a better direction:
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33
The right priority
When God is my priority and I’m following Him, He leads me away from things that could trip me up. With an added bonus: I tend to be much more productive – as if He’s added extra hours to my day.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. Psalm 40:2

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for providing the light of Your Word so I can make good decisions today. Forgive me when I confuse the things I think are urgent with what is most important: my relationship with You. Help me focus on You and the path You have for me today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
