Adding a Special Element

I use my structured prayer journal to facilitate my prayer life. Every Sunday, I start a new weekly worksheet.

It is a special time. I like to wrap up the past week by reflecting on my entries of what God has done and spoken to me. Sometimes, I go back and make updates throughout my whole Prayer Closet Organizer journal.

Another thing I like to do during this prayer time on Sunday evenings to make it a little more special is to add a personal communion aspect. I know that the “breaking of bread” is more of a communal activity, but I do like doing it in private during my Sunday night prayer time, too.

I once heard a Messianic Jewish preacher teach on communion, and he pointed out something new to me. He spoke about how the disciples had recognized the post-resurrected Christ after He broke bread with them.

Then the two disciples told what had happened on the road and how they had recognized Jesus when he broke the bread. Luke 24:35

The preacher said that one benefit to communion is that it helps us to see Jesus more clearly. Oh, how I want and need to see Him more clearly. I absolutely have to have clarity when it comes to the things of God.

He took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. This he did with his usual authority and affection, with the same manner, perhaps with the same words. He here teaches us to crave a blessing on every meal. See how Christ by his Spirit and grace makes himself known to the souls of his people. He opens the Scriptures to them. He meets them at his table, in the ordinance of the Lord’s supper; is known to them in breaking of bread. But the work is completed by the opening of the eyes of their mind; yet it is but short views we have of Christ in this world, but when we enter heaven, we shall see him for ever. ~Matthew Henry

With the reading of God’s Word, I set my communion table. I quietly take my communion bread and break it. Symbolically, one piece consumed represents Jesus’ body and the other piece is with another prayer for more clarity. Then I receive the grape juice in thanks for Christ’s blood that was shed for my sins.

Making your prayer time a little more special even if it is only a weekly discipline can make a positive impact to your prayer life.
