Are you ready for some good news?
When beauty meets majesty, it demands to be shared in love.
Think about the climax in the magnificent story of Mephibosheth:
Mephibosheth was the son of Jonathon who was the son of King Saul. When David became king, he didn’t do as kings normally did. Instead of seeking his predecessor’s descendants in order to eliminate their threat to the throne, he sought to bless for the sake of a covenant he had made with Jonathon.
Imagine the day. The new king has settled into the palace, extended Israel’s borders and won the acclaim of the people. He could have anything. He could punish anyone. Instead, here’s King David’s heart:
“And David said, “Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”” (2 Samuel 9:1, ESV)
Whenever we travel to the coast, I run to the beach first thing. I want to greet the sea, touch the sand, and breathe in the salt air. My wife, on the other hand, can’t enjoy herself until she nests a bit. She wants to make sure the place is clean, that the rooms are ready and that the refrigerator is stocked. Some years ago, we arrived at the beach at dusk. When I stepped out the back door, I almost gasped at the beauty of the sunset. The orange and pink hues merged amidst wispy clouds barely hiding a rich, red sun that was setting quickly. I ran inside: “Honey, come quickly, you must see this! The sunset is beautiful.” She said she’d come, but she didn’t. The sun was going down fast. I returned: “Honey, come now, the sun will soon be gone – you must see it.” Almost reluctantly, Anne sauntered to the beach with me whereupon her breath was taken away with mine.
I was happier with her seeing the glory. Why? Because when beauty meets majesty it demands to be shared. The beauty of David’s heart met the majesty of his office and, remembering his covenant with Jonathon, the new king wanted to share his glory.
Oh the heart of God! He is a king I tell you and He sees wonders that He wants you to see. He is full of love and He longs to share it. Hearken to the voice of your King when He beckons you to the wonders of His breathtaking grace. You are loved and sought and blessed because the King is overflowing with covenantal love. And that’s the Gospel!
