Mothers bear a primary responsibility of instilling truth to future generations who will love and serve the Lord. It’s a sacred and high calling entrusted to women.
A mother is a gospel-gardener who mirrors the selfless sacrifice of Jesus in each small, yet significant act of love in tending for her family. Her nurturing instinct is cultivated at home then spreads beyond the borders of her family like a perennial vine to reach nieces, nephews, grandchildren, even great-grandchildren. When a woman fulfills her God-ordained calling (Titus 2:3-5), her fruit-bearing from seeds sown will reach limitless spiritual sons and daughters.
Let’s join our hearts to take time to pray for moms of biological, adopted, and spiritual children everywhere . . .
A Prayer for Mothers
Father, we praise You first of all for perfectly parenting us. You never fail. Your mercy overflows for the far-too-numerous times we’ve neglected to extend Your welcoming love and kindness to our precious children of every age.
Thank You, Jesus, for achieving perfection through Your blameless life so we can revel in freedom from incessant striving to accomplish what we were never intended to grasp. Lord, break the crippling chains of performance, perfect kids, and perfect homes.
Teach us to set aside our crazy schedules to splash in the springs of Your living waters. We may foolishly try to navigate motherhood on our own, but Your love always pursues — never letting go.
You didn’t promise mothering would be easy. Our souls have been pierced like Mary’s (Luke 2:35) and You bend down to capture every tear. Oh, how we need Your grace to . . . love more, trust more, pray more, and to make merry in the gospel most of all.
For the overwhelmed mom, woo her to Yourself to provide relief from the weight of her heavy burdens. Help her slow down to hear and follow Your voice (Matthew 11:28-30; John 10:27; Revelation 3:20).
For the new mom, lavish her with spiritual rest in sleep-deprived days. Let her grasp with both hands a confident faith that gospel grace will enable her to parent through Your power and love (Isaiah 40:29-31; Ephesians 3:14-21).
For the yet-to-be mom, lift her head to You as the ultimate satisfaction in the journey of waiting. Meet the longings of her heart through Jesus. Give her insight into her vital role in Kingdom building (Psalm 9:10; Psalm 113:9).
For the single mom, sustain this sister with daily stamina, wisdom, and abiding peace for the present and the future. Show her You can be trusted to carry her anxieties because of Your constant care (Philippians 4:6-7, 12-13; 1 Peter 5:7).
For the empty-nest mom, invigorate her with vision for a new season of life-giving. Divinely assign spiritual daughters for her to cherish and encourage (Genesis 3:20; Titus 2:3-5).
For the broken mom who’s lost a child or quietly suffers in a fractured relationship, heal the unspeakable hurt and open her tear-filled eyes of faith to trust You with what she cannot understand (Psalm 33:20–22, Psalm 147:3).
We lift up mothers, asking for Your selfless love to flow through us to wrap around our loved ones. As You provide, dear God, keep our familial love from eclipsing the burning affection we have for Your Son, Jesus, in whose glory we adorn and in whose matchless name we pray. Amen.
