As a parent, I have prayed for my two sons for many years. Even before each one was born, my husband and I began praying for them; for their salvation, their walk with the Lord, their morals and their spiritual growth, according to Colossians 1:9-11:
“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.” NIV
I prayed for God to help my sons through difficult times and to help them make wise choices. I also prayed for their future wives; that God would bring godly, Christian girls into their lives. God answered my prayers and we have two wonderful daughters-in-law who have brought much joy to our family. I now also pray for my grandchildren and for my three great grandchildren.
As I learned about the fruit of the Spirit and its importance in our lives, I began praying regularly (a different fruit each week) that these character traits and fruit would also be developed in our sons’ lives. ―But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” - Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
